Making and doing

Each piece is individually hand-built from Australian clay. I begin by drawing out each design before transferring it directly onto the raw clay. I don’t use commercially made stencils, templates or transfer paper; each design is drawn by hand.

When creating a repeat pattern, I may free-draw an element and then make a simple paper template from my own design to help maintain consistency across the piece. Underglaze is painted onto the unfired greenware before the design is carefully carved through the coloured surface, revealing the natural clay beneath. Once the carving is complete, the piece is glazed and fired again, transforming the clay and layered surface into its finished form.

From shaping the clay and drawing the design to painting, carving, glazing and firing, each piece passes through my hands many times. This slow, hands-on process is central to my practice and ensures that every work is individually made.
